Modernized E-file for North Dakota individual income tax returns is open to participants who have been accepted into the IRS e-file program. Once accepted by the IRS, electronic return originators (EROs) are allowed to e-file North Dakota returns. No separate North Dakota application is required.

North Dakota recognizes the federal personal identification number (PIN) as the signature for the North Dakota returns.

The ERO must retain any attachments such as W-2s for three years after the return is due, including extensions. In the event the state requests supporting documentation to verify the validity of the electronic return, the ERO will be required to submit the requested information to the state within five business days.
